A few weeks ago I had the absolute pleasure of being interviewed by BUNCH Magazine. If you’ve never heard of it, BUNCH Magazine is a Guide For The Daring Creative.
“[They] highlight influencers across creative communities, telling the story of risk takers who have merged their passions with their profession. The aim is to cultivate a like-minded collective, a place where readers are inspired and motivated.” I’ve always been inspired by the different stories of various creatives on their online blog and I feel incredibly humbled to be featured this week.
Here are a few highlights from the interview:
HOW DID YOU GO FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION?
I’ve been juggling multiple different jobs for the past five years, from politics to marketing. When I’d get home from work, I’d decompress by painting or sketching. It’s always been my escape, even when I was younger. About three years ago, I started to post my sketches and paintings on Instagram and occasionally I’d have people interested in buying my pieces! Long story short, I ditched my 9-5 and started pursuing painting and graphic design full-time.
HOW DOES THE CITY YOU LIVE IN INFLUENCE YOUR CREATIVITY?
Salt Lake City is an incredible little hub for creatives. It’s a city that is constantly expanding, which provides a lot of room for new opportunities and growth. It’s big enough to feel like “city-life”, but small enough for artists to leave a mark and not feel drowned out.
My art is mostly inspired by my hometown, though! I try to visit California as much as possible for creative revelation, even though Salt Lake City feels more like home now.
NAME 3 LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED FROM BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS:
No. 1: Don’t compare your art to other artists. Only compare to your own previous pieces!
No. 2: Find a routine. If you’re feeling frustrated, take a walk.
No. 3: Don’t be afraid to try new techniques – it’s the only way to keep getting better.
